A Conversation Larger Than Pride Month
On July 1, 2026, Phi Psi Lambda Leadership Society, Inc. convened a Lead360 webinar titled “PRIDE at the Intersection: Connecting Race, Gender, and Advocacy for LGBTQ+ Communities of Color.” The conversation moved beyond seasonal celebration and asked what it means to see people whole when the world keeps trying to divide them into fragments.
Hosted by Joshua H. Jimenez, International Senior Executive Vice President of Phi Psi Lambda Leadership Society, Inc., the episode positioned Lead360 as more than a digital program. It became a public table: a place for leadership, social awareness, and community learning to meet with honesty — where belonging, identity, and advocacy are not buzzwords, but daily practice.
Lived, Not Theoretical
The Intersection Is Not a Theory.
It Is a Daily Reality.
For Black and Brown LGBTQ+ communities, intersectionality is not an abstract theory. It is lived across workplaces, homes, schools, faith spaces, healthcare systems, public life, and family structures. The webinar named the tension of being fully oneself in rooms that may understand one identity while questioning another.

Cooper reframed belonging not as the search for a perfect mirror, but as the courage to bring one’s gifts into relationship. Fitting in asks a person to contort. Pairing asks what each person brings. Fitting in is about approval. Pairing is about relationship.

Beyond Soft Skills
Communication Is a Social Condition

Cooper challenged institutions to rethink communication not merely as a professional skill, but as a social condition that shapes belonging, conflict, and public life. When communication breaks down, people with intersectional identities are flattened to one category, one issue, and one assumption.

The webinar highlighted the barriers transgender people of color face in employment, housing, healthcare, school records, legal documents, public life, and everyday safety. Cooper made clear that advocacy must protect safety, dignity, access, and the right to exist fully.
Employment
Trans people of color face disproportionate hiring discrimination and workplace mistreatment.
Build hiring and workplace policies that protect gender identity, explicitly.
Housing
Housing instability and discrimination remain widespread barriers to safety and stability.
Support fair-housing protections that name and enforce gender-identity nondiscrimination.
Healthcare
Access to affirming, competent care is inconsistent, and often outright denied.
Champion healthcare systems trained in and committed to gender-affirming care.
Legal Records
Outdated names and gender markers on IDs create daily risk and repeated disclosure.
Advocate for accessible, affordable pathways to update legal documents.
Safety
Violence against trans people of color continues at devastating, disproportionate rates.
Fund and trust community-led safety and rapid-response networks.
Public Life
Being visible in public spaces can invite scrutiny instead of simple, ordinary belonging.
Create public spaces and institutions where existing openly is unremarkable.

Storytelling as Advocacy
As a director, actor, and award-winning filmmaker, Skyler Cooper uses storytelling as infrastructure for empathy. His work challenges dehumanizing narratives and creates space for authentic representation, healing, and public imagination.
Worthy of Survival
Skyler’s forthcoming feature film, Worthy of Survival, moves between the Civil War era and the present day to explore mental health, ancestral resilience, and the enduring fight to preserve one’s humanity in the face of oppressive systems.

Phi Psi Lambda Leadership Society, Inc. positioned the webinar as part of a larger commitment to leadership, impact, legacy, and social awareness. Lead360 demonstrated that leadership for communities of color must be expansive enough to include queer and trans lives.

The Charge
Lead With Humanity
The July 1 conversation modeled a necessary alternative: vulnerability without spectacle, conviction without cruelty, and advocacy without simplification. It showed that the future of leadership belongs to those who can hold complexity without retreating from truth.
For LGBTQ+ communities of color, visibility alone is not enough. Representation alone is not enough. The deeper need is for communities and institutions that can protect safety, honor complexity, and create pathways to leadership.
Do not fit in. Pair.
Do not surrender identity. Remember humanity.
Do not accept communication that turns people into threats. Build language that preserves dignity.
